LinkedIn Co-Founder Predicts the End of 9-to-5 Jobs Due to AI

Reid Hoffman

Imagine this: 9-to-5 work is a thing of the past in 2034, much like dial-up internet and fax machines. Reid Hoffman, a co-founder of LinkedIn, claims that this is an impending reality rather than a fantastical future. According to Hoffman, traditional 9–5 employment will become outdated by 2034.

Hoffman predicts a paradigm shift in the labor market due to artificial intelligence’s (AI) rapid advancement in a widely shared video clip. He predicts that the gig economy will grow and radically transform the nature of labor. In contrast to traditional employment, workers will simultaneously manage many contracts across different sectors, embracing responsibilities in a less secure but more flexible way.

He continued, “This shift heralds both challenges and opportunities.” While there are concerns about the loss of job stability, there is also hope for increased flexibility and a wide range of possibilities, which could redefine what it means to be happy in one’s career. Hoffman bases his forecasts on the expanding gig economy, which is being driven by social media’s widespread effects and technological developments.

Commenting on AI’s impact on the hospitality sector, Hoffman said, “AI is already being integrated into restaurants and hospitality, and this trend will continue. Nevertheless, the fundamentally human and significant experience of sharing a meal will remain central.”

An angel investor and businessman named Neal Taparia posted Hoffman’s video on X (formerly Twitter). Hoffman’s previous forecasts are unsettling; he wrote: I foresaw the sharing economy (early Airbnb investment), advocated for the AI revolution years before ChatGPT, and predicted social networks would transform the world (LinkedIn sold for $26 billion).

Taparia also mentioned how quickly AI is developing, calling it both amazing and disturbing. “After ChatGPT was introduced to the market, millions of jobs worldwide were rendered obsolete, and numerous businesses began preparing their staff to work with artificial intelligence technologies,” he continued.

In the future, Taparia projected that traditional resumes would become outdated and that independent contractors might surpass permanent staff in income.
